Mumbai, May 16: Snapping a losing streak of last six sessions, the BSE Sensex on Monday recovered 180.22 pts to close at 52,973.84 on the strength of Telecom, Auto, Power and Realty stocks.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) too rose 160.15 pts at 15,842.30. The Sensex opened higher by 153 pts at 52,946.32. It surged 635 pts to reach 53,428.28, days high before closing at 52,973.84, up 180.22 pts from its previous close. The Sensex registered the day’s high and low at 53,428.28 and 52,632.48 pts respectively.
The Nifty recorded the day’s high and low at 15,977.95 and 15,739.65 respectively. The sectoral indices like Realty, Telecom, Auto, Utilities and Power pushed the market up. In scrips, NTPC, was a major gainer up 3.05 pc at Rs 148.45 followed by Bajaj finance, Bajaj Finance by 2.37 pc to Rs 5646.05, SBI by 2.27 pc to Rs 455.15, Maruti Suzuki by 2.14 pc to Rs 7253.90 and HDFC by 1.96 pc to Rs 2174.45.
The losers today were Ultracemco by 3.01 pc to close at Rs 6013.05, Asian Paints by 2.15 pc to Rs 2999.45, ITC by 1.78 pc to Rs 254.05 and Tech Mahindra by 1.22 pc to Rs 1187.60. The Mid Cap rose by 1.51 pc and Small Cap by 1.15 pc. In 30 scrips, 18 advanced while 12 declined. The Asian Market went up as Australia rose by 0.25 pc, Hong Kong by 0.11 pc, Japan by 0.45 pc and Taiwan by 0.43 pc.
