Colombo, April 4: The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, on Monday resigned amid an unprecedented economic crisis in the island nation. He submitted his resignation to beleaguered President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
“In the context of all Cabinet Ministers resigning, I have today submitted my resignation as Governor … to President,” Cabraal tweeted.
Earlier, the Cabinet Ministers, except Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Rajapaksa, resigned. Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the Cabinet Ministers had submitted their resignation to the Prime Minister, hoping it would help the President and the Prime Minister “to establish stability for the people and the government”.
Sri Lanka has been grappling with its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. The crisis has been partially caused by a fall in the country’s foreign currency reserves, which pays for fuel imports, causing prolonged power cuts across the country and shortages of essential items like food as well as medicines.
