The first batch of Prisoners had arrived in the Islands on 6th March, 1922 and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail,” Abdul Siddique, General Secretary of Andaman Moplah Service Organization (AMSO) told UNI on Saturday.Siddique added that since then, more Mopla Prisoners were brought into the Islands.
Post-independence, the community settled in the Islands and the present community members constitute the third and fourth generation descendants. He said that during the British era the deplorable living conditions and the severity of the punishment meted out by the Britishers had made life miserable for Mopla Prisoners.
