Cinema Solution To Unsolvable Problems: ISIS Attack Victim

Thiruvananthapuram, March 18 : ISIS attack victim Lisa Calan, the Kurdish director who was given the ‘Spirit of Cinema’ award by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at IFFK here on Friday for her brave contribution to the cinema, stated that for the problems that we cannot solve there is cinema. She sees cinema as a means of revolutionary expression and stressed that there is a need for more international unions, network, solidarity and festivals where every artists could come together for making the possibility for more political cinemas. She also stated that an artist must be the first person to depict the truth which is often ignored by the society. Calan had both her legs amputated in a bomb blast engineered by the ISIS in 2015. However, Calan refused to be cowed down, even going so far as to bury her legs in her father’s grave.
IFFK honoured the brave film director who has stood with the survivors and exposed the issues faced by the Kurdish people to the world. Her powerful film, Language of Mountains, which portrays the survival story of Kurdish people in the backdrop of a school, will premiere at IFFK 2022 under the section, Spirit of Cinema. The first screening will be on March 19 at Ariesplux-6 Cinema. The constant conflicts in Iran and Turkey have left a deep scar in the minds of the Kurdish people. These and other incidents served to widen Calan’s perspectives. By honoring Calan, IFFK aims to send a message of solidarity with the struggling Kurdish women in their fight for justice and freedom, a statement said.
