New Delhi, Mar 12 : The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision body, will meet here on Sunday, three days after the country’s oldest party suffered humiliating defeats in assembly elections in all five states.
The meeting comes amidst a clamour in the party for organisational reforms following the loss of power in Punjab and the failure to win in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur besides the pitiable performance in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, reports surfaced on Saturday evening saying Congress President Sonia Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi may offer their resignations at the CWC meet. The reports were denied by the party, and Chief Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted calling the reports “unfair, mischievous and incorrect.” A meeting of the Parliamentary Strategy Group of the Congress will also be held earlier on Sunday morning, informed sources said. In the recently concluded assembly polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur while the Aam Aadmi Party swept the polls in Punjab.
Senior leaders of the party who have come to be known as G-23, a group demanding organisational elections, met here on Friday night and are expected to raise the issue again at the CWC meeting. Party leaders including Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal and Ghulam Nabi Azad, who have from time to time demanded organisational polls, met at Azad’s residence. Anand Sharma, Bhupender Singh Hooda, and Akhilesh Prasad Singh also attended the meeting.
