Kyiv, March 2 : Days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Hollywood actor and filmmaker Sean Penn joined the rank of the thousands in their exodus from Ukraine. The 61-year-old “Dead Man Walking” actor walked to the Polish border. He posted a photo on his Twitter handle on Monday which showed him wearing a backpack and toting a piece of luggage on wheels as he walked along the shoulder of a road beside a line of cars stretching into the distance. “Myself & two colleagues walked miles to the Polish border after abandoning our car on the side of the road,” Penn said in a caption tweeted with the picture.
“Almost all the cars in this photo carry women & children only, most without any sign of luggage, and a car their only possession of value.” The tweet, however, did not mention the reason for not taking a vehicle. Before leaving the country, Penn also appeared at a press briefing here, where he listened to government officials talk about the crisis. “Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind,” Penn said.
The actor-director was lauded by the Office of the President “Today, Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine. Our country is grateful to him for such a display of courage and honesty”, who wrote the following statement in a Facebook statement. Penn had also met Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk and also spoke to the media and military personnel about the Russian aggression.
According to the post, Penn had come to Ukraine last November for the documentary and spoke with the Ukrainian military. In a statement last week, Penn praised the Ukrainian people as “historic symbols of courage” and called Ukraine “the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams”. “If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost,” Penn wrote. Penn debuted in 1981 with the film “Taps” and received critical acclaim for “At Close Range” (1986), “State of Grace” (1990) and “Carlito’s Way” (1993) and won two Oscars for his role in the mystery Drama “Mystic River” (2003) and the biopic “Milk” (2008).
