EU Bans Sputnik, RT In Europe
Brussels, March 2: The European Union has banned the broadcasting and distribution of content of RT and Sputnik as part of the sanctions against Russia over military operation in Ukraine, according to the document published in the Official Journal of the EU.
“In view of the gravity of the situation, and in response to Russia’s actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine, it is necessary and consistent with fundamental rights and freedoms to introduce further restrictive measures and to suspend the broadcasting activities of Russia Today and Sputnik in or directed at the EU,” the EU said in a statement.
The ban applies to all means of content transmission and distribution, such as cable, satellite, IPTV, platforms, websites and apps. All relevant RT, Sputnik licenses and agreements are suspended, the statement said. The media in question are RT English, RT UK, RT Germany, RT France, RT Spanish and Sputnik.
