Mumbai, Feb 16 : The “Rambaa Ho Ho…” man of Bollywood is no more. Composer and singer Bappi Lahiri passed away at the age of 69 at a Juhu hospital in Mumbai due to critical breathing trouble. From dancing divas Hema Malini to Madhuri Dixit, from superstars Akshay Kumar, Chiranjeevi, Vidya Balan, to filmmaker Karan Johar and ace composer AR Rahman — tributes are pouring in for “Bappi Da” from all corners. Hema Malini: Bappi Lahiri or Bappi Da as he was affly called, passed away around midnight.He will be remembered for his new disco music & fast numbers which he introduced in films, something no one had done earlier.He will be sorely missed by the industry & by all his many fans. Lahiri, who was suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea for past one year and recurrent chest infection, was hospitalised in Criticare Hospital, Juhu, for 29 days. He was discharged on February 15, however, later his health deteriorated and was readmitted in a critical state.
Hours later he succumbed to his illness at about 11.45 pm. Fondly known as Bappi Da, his real name Alokesh Lahiri. He was born in 1952 in a family of singers Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Generations who danced to ‘Yaar Bina..’ and ‘Ramba Ho..’ was mostly those grooved to music played on cassettes, a bygone era. However, Lahiri was much sought-after by filmmakers of that generation who wanted to tell their tale to the GenX. So he sang the title track of “Dirty Picture” which was an instant hit with all generations. He was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at 63rd Filmfare Awards in 2018. His last Bollywood song titled ‘Bhankas’ was for the film ‘Baaghi 3’, released in 2020.
