China Encroached Into Nepal’s Territory
London, Feb 8: China encroached into Nepal along the two countries’ borders, according to a Nepalese government report leaked to BBC. The report was commissioned last September, following claims that China has been trespassing in the district of Humla, in the far west of Nepal, BBC reported on Tuesday.
This is the first time Nepal’s officials claimed the interference of China in its side of the border. However, the Embassy of China in Kathmandu rejected any encroachment. Nepal and China share a border of nearly 1400 km along the Himalayan mountains. Following reports of Chinese encroachment, Nepal government decided to send a team consisting of personnel from police and the government to Humla. A series of buildings were also erected by China on the Nepal’s side of the border, according to some claims.
In its report, the group found that surveillance activities by Chinese security forces had restricted religious activities on the Nepalese side of the border in a place called Lalungjong, the BBC said in its report. The area has traditionally been a draw for pilgrims because of its proximity to Mount Kailash, just over the border in China, which is a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, the British broadcaster said.
In the same area, it found China was building a fence around a border pillar, and attempting to construct a canal and a road on the Nepalese side of the border, BBC said. But the taskforce did find Chinese buildings, originally thought to have been constructed inside Nepal had, in fact, been built on the Chinese side of the border.
