Indore, Sep 4 : In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the nation, two newborn babies were bitten by rodents in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of M.Y. Hospital, Indore the largest government-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh. One of the babies, a newborn girl, tragically succumbed to the injuries, raising urgent questions about safety, hygiene, and accountability in the state’s healthcare system. The incident came to light after CCTV footage confirmed the presence of rats near the infants, exposing severe negligence within the hospital administration. A six-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter and report within a week.Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, strongly condemned the Madhya Pradesh government over the incident, calling it “outright murder” rather than an accident. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi said the incident was “horrifying, inhuman, and insensitive” and criticized the government’s failure to protect the most vulnerable newborns. He asserted that the state administration had failed in its basic responsibility, adding that such gross negligence shatters public trust in government healthcare institutions.Rahul Gandhi also launched a broader critique of the healthcare system, accusing the government of deliberately weakening public healthcare in favor of privatization. He said that government hospitals, which should serve the poor, are turning into “death traps” instead of life-saving institutions. Gandhi questioned the repeated promises of “investigation” by the authorities and asked, “When you can’t even ensure the safety of newborns, what right do you have to run a government?” His statement was a direct attack on both the Chief Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The horrifying incident has triggered nationwide outrage and renewed scrutiny of healthcare standards in government hospitals. It brings to the forefront the urgent need for systemic reforms, better infrastructure, and strict accountability in the health sector. While the inquiry committee works on its report, the people of Madhya Pradesh and the country are demanding answers and justice. This tragedy is not just a medical lapse; it’s a moral failure of governance that can no longer be brushed aside.
