Year Ender: The year 2024 was amazing for athletics, but Neeraj Chopra missed Olympic gold
Year Ender: Neeraj Chopra, the biggest star of Indian athletics, continued his magic in 2024. Although he was not successful in saving the gold medal and crossing the distance of 90 meters in the Paris Olympics, still his performance was excellent. 26-year-old Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, where he finished second behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal by creating a new record of 92.97 metres. Apart from this, Chopra also finished second in the prestigious Diamond League finals, although his target was to cross the distance of 90 meters, which he could not achieve despite coming close to it twice this year. His best performance was 89.94 metres. Next year he will try to achieve this goal.
Was very worried due to injury
However, one important thing about Chopra’s achievements is that he achieved all these successes despite being injured. Before the Paris Olympics, he struggled with a thigh muscle strain and also injured his left hand before the Diamond League final. Despite this, his hard work and struggle brought him success despite these difficulties.
How was the performance of other players?
Talking about the performance of other players of Indian athletics this year, Avinash Sable, who won medals in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 3000 meter steeplechase, finished 11th in Paris Olympics and failed to advance. Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar could not participate in the Olympics due to a knee injury and surgery. At the same time, the men’s 400 meter relay team could not even qualify for the finals, which was a big disappointment for the Indian Athletics Federation.
However, some good records were also made this year. Sable set a new national record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League, while Akshdeep Singh, Gulveer Singh, KM Diksha, and Abha Khatua created new national records in their respective events. These records showed a new direction to Indian athletics, and it is expected that in the coming times, more players will bring glory to India at the national and international level.
