OPS Urges PM to Ensure Release of 55 TN Fishermen Detained By Lankan Navy

Chennai, Dec 20: Opposition AIADMK Coordinator and former Chief Minister O Paneerselvam on Mondya urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps for securing the release of 55 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In a letter to Mr Modi, copies of which were released to the media here, he cited the arrested of 55 fishermen in two separate incidents for allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan waters and said the intention of the Lankan Navy was to instill fear in the minds of the fishermen and prevent them from fishing in their traditional waters.

“The instances of apprehension of our fishermen continue unabated and causing unrest among the fishermen community in Tamil Nadu”, Mr Panneerselvam said and sought Mr Modi’s intervention in the matter and ensure that the Sri Lankan government release all the 55 fishermen and their boats. Meanwhile MDMK General Secretary Vaiko said India should snap also diplomatic ties with the Island Nation if the fishermen were not released.
