Mamata congratulates all stakeholders for topping “Foundational Literacy & Numeracy Index”
Kolkata: Close on the heels of UNESCO’s recognising Durga Puja as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity-First in Asia, Bengal added another feather to its cap, securing top rank on “Foundational Literacy & Numeracy Index” in India.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday congratulated all teaching community, guardians and members of the Education Department after the state secured top rank among larger states on the “Foundation Literacy & numeracy Index ” in the country.
West Bengal topped the chart in the ‘large states’ category on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’ — an indicator of literacy among children below 10 years. Bihar hit the bottom among the larger states.
In the ‘small states’ category, Kerala topped the list and Jharkhand was adjudged the worst performer on the index.
A report said under the “Foundation & Literacy Index” there are four categories in which regions have been divided — large states, small states, Union Territories and North East.
The report on the ‘Index on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy’ was prepared by the ‘Institute for Competitiveness’ and released by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) Chairman Bibek Debroy.
It is challenging to ensure quality Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. “The top-scoring regions are Kerala (67.95) and West Bengal (58.95) in small and large states, respectively, ” the EAC-PM said in a statement. “Great news for West Bengal,” the Chief Minister said and added, “We have secured the top rank among larger states n the “Foundation Literacy & Numeracy Index”. “I congratulate all teachers, guardians and members of our education department for this outstanding achievement, ” she averred.
