RS Adjourned for the Day Amid Protests
New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was on Thursday adjourned for the day after opposition members continued to create ruckus over the suspension of 12 MPs seeking the revocation of their ban.
The upper house witnessed its first adjournment after Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu called for Zero Hour. But the opposition began shouting to be heard to raise the issue of the suspension of 12 members on November 29 for disorderly conduct.
The Chairman abruptly got up and announced adjournment till 2 pm. As soon as the proceedings resumed after lunch, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh asked Syed Zafar Islam of the Bharatiya Janata Party to start a discussion on the Omicron variant.
Deputy Leader of the Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma and senior member Jairam Ramesh tried to speak. Meanwhile, some members of the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, DMK and Trinamool Congress stood up and started moving towards the Speaker.
Singh said the discussion on an important issue like Omicron was sought by the opposition but now they were not allowing the House to discuss it. “This is a very serious subject,” he added.
He repeatedly appealed to the members to return to their places. However, the opposition members came close to the podium and raised their voice, leading to the adjournment for the day. The government wants the suspended members to apologize for their conduct.
