Puri, Nov.14 : Hundreds of sanitation workers engaged in cleaning and washing trains at the Puri railway station in Odisha have struck work and held a sit-in protest on Tuesday demanding payment of minimum wage and bonus.
The workers, who have gone on strike since Monday, held the sit-in protest in front of the office of the Chief Depot Officer.
Since Puri is a terminating station, most of the trains are cleaned and washed here before being put to use again.
K. Santosh and Umakant Nayak, the leaders of the striking workers, said 365 workers are deployed in train cleansing work for many years under a private company.
“Though we have been demanding the fulfilment of our genuine demands, both the company and the railway authorities who have engaged the company have turned a deaf ear to our pleas,” they said.
They said the sit-in would continue till the demands are met.
