Mumbai, Nov 3 : Mumbai City FC had to work hard to go past Punjab FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Thursday as two goals inside a minute helped the Islanders turn a one-goal deficit into a lead.
In the frenzy of that decisive minute, head coach Des Buckingham reached a milestone of 100 goals scored under his tutelage in the ISL.
The Englishman is only the third head coach in ISL history to oversee 100 goals at a single club after Sergio Lobera at FC Goa and Manolo Marquez at Hyderabad FC.
Moreover, Buckingham is the fastest among the three coaches to reach the 100 mark as he has managed the feat in just 47 matches.
Mumbai City FC have been scintillating under Englishman winning 27 out of the 47 matches played under him and losing just ten.
He guided the Islanders to the League Shield triumph last season with a record points, wins and goals tally and has helped them make an unbeaten start to the 2023-24 season.
Mumbai City FC are second in the table and sit just one point behind leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant, albeit having played a game more.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz who scored the winner against Punjab FC is the league’s top goalscorer with five goals so far this season.
Mumbai City FC take on Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal on Monday and their next match in the ISL will see them travel to face Bengaluru FC on December 8.
