Bhubaneswar, Sep 3 (UNI) The mortal remains of former Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker were consigned to flames with full state honours at his native place at Digapahandi in Ganjam district on Sunday evening.
His son Biplab Patra lit the funeral pyre.
Patra (75) passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here on Saturday.
Hundreds of people from all walks of life including administrative officers and people’s representatives of the district were present to bid adieu to the departed leader.
Earlier in the morning Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited the residence of Patra at Nabapalli in the capital city and paid his last tribute to the departed leader. He also expressed his sympathies to the bereaved family members.
In addition to the Chief Minister several ministers of Odisha, political leaders of various political parties, his relatives and hundreds of his well wishers also paid their last tribute to the departed leader.
After the Chief Minister paid his tribute , the body was taken to Sankha Bhawan, the BJD state party head office and to the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
The body was taken to Digapahandi after a guard of honour was given to the former speaker and the members of the Assembly paid their last tribute to the departed leader.
