Delhi Govt opts for CNG buses to Curb Air Pollution
New Delhi: Acute Air pollution of capital city has become a chronic pain for people as well as the Government. In order to curb the vehicular emission contributing to toxicity in the air, the Delhi Government will hire as many as 1,000 private CNG buses. After a high-level meeting with the concerned department officials, the Environment Minister Gopal Rai has announced this on Wednesday.
“The buses will increase the frequency and encourage people to take public transport. The process will start from Thursday,” Rai said at a press conference here. Besides, all schools, colleges, educational institutions, coaching centers and libraries will remain physically shut till further orders, according to the directions announced by the Minister.
Work From Home (WFH) for its employees has also been extended by the Delhi government. To add on to, acting upon the directions of the Centre’s Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) construction and demolition activities are banned till November 21.
Delhi’s overall air quality index (AQI) on Wednesday morning remained in the ‘very poor’ quality, recorded at 379 at 0700 hrs, according to the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ air quality monitor SAFAR. The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) had issued a slew of directions on late Tuesday night, including physical closure of schools, colleges and educational institutions in NCR states.
It also said that only five of 11 thermal power plants located within a 300 km radius of Delhi will remain operational till November 30.
