After Odisha Train Crash, Railway Board Order Signals Assets Double Locking System

New Delhi: The Railway Board on Saturday ordered a double-locking arrangement for all its signalling assets and also issued directions to bolster the protocol for the commencement of train movement after maintenance work, officials said.

In fact, the order indicated that in the Balasore train accident, there was interference in the signaling system due to access to the relay room, which caused the Coromandel Express to go into the loop line and hit a stationary goods train, causing the entire accident. Senior officials said there was enough evidence to show that the interlocking system was tampered with, so now the mechanism has to be made tamper-proof. This double locking will ensure that no one can access these places without permission.

“With enough evidence to show that some human interference was involved in the interlocking system that caused the deadly accident, it is now important for us to make it tamper-proof,” said a senior railways official.

“This double locking will ensure that no one can access these locations in isolation,” he added.

This is the third such order on signalling issued by the Railway Board since the accident is being probed by the CBI.
