Mother died in childhood, then got Paralympic medal with hard work; Now Nitya’s statement on Arjun Award has come out.
Nithya Sree Sivan: At the Paris Paralympics 2024, Nitya Sri Sivan won the bronze medal in the SH6 category of women’s singles badminton. Now he has been selected for the Arjuna Award by the Sports Ministry for his excellent performance. Born and brought up in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Nitya lost her mother when she was just one year old. His father and grandmother raised him and during this time his brother fully supported him.
Called Arjun Award a special honor
Nitya Sri Sivan said that when I was in sixth or seventh class, my physical development had stopped. There used to be mischief against me in school. I used to be very sad. I used to get upset and cry on every small thing. This award is an answer to those people that I too can do something and achieve great things. I have seen many of my fellow players winning awards and achieving achievements. Therefore receiving one of the National Awards is very prestigious.
Has won three medals in Asian Para Games
She said that I often stayed inside the house. My father constantly encouraged me to play so that I did not hesitate to step out of the house. Badminton has helped me in this. I feel really free now. Before playing badminton, I didn’t really talk much, but now I talk to people without any hesitation. Nitya’s father, who won three bronze medals in the Asian Para Games (2022), is very fond of sports.
She said that my father used to play cricket with a big team every Sunday and I used to go to watch with him. My brother was a district level player and I also used to go to his academy with him. Sometimes, we used to play street cricket. When I considered taking up cricket, there were no women players. He saw badminton for the first time during the Rio Olympics and everything changed after that. It became his favorite sport and then his passion.
Got inspiration after seeing PV Sindhu
Nitya said that my brother chose badminton for fitness and I also joined him. In 2016, I was inspired by watching PV Sindhu and started playing badminton on the streets with my friends. This piqued my interest in practicing and I started practicing twice a week. Over time this gradually increased into daily sessions.
