Bhubaneswar, Sep 18 : The monsoon session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly began today. In a strategic move ahead of the session, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) held a key meeting yesterday, attended by CLP leader Ramchandra Kadam and Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das . During this meeting, the Congress decided to bring a no-confidence motion against the ruling state government.
Acting on this decision, a notice for the no-confidence motion, signed by at least 15 MLAs in support, was submitted today by Ramchandra Kadam to the Speaker through the Assembly Secretary. The Congress alleges that the state government has failed on multiple fronts and can no longer enjoy the confidence of the people.
One of the major grounds for this motion, as highlighted by OPCC President Bhakta Charan Das in earlier statements, is the sharp rise in crimes against women across Odisha. He pointed out that Odisha has now become the worst-performing state in India in terms of crimes against women. Reports suggest that there isn’t a single district in the state where women, including school-going girls, homemakers, and elderly women, are safe from heinous crimes like rape, assault, and even murder.
The Congress also slammed the state government for its failure to address critical issues faced by farmers, particularly in controlling the black marketing of fertilizers. Furthermore, the party accused the government of letting the education and healthcare systems collapse, saying they are now completely dysfunctional.
Another major allegation raised by the Congress is the lack of recruitment and employment opportunities. In the past 15 months, the state government has allegedly not conducted a single recruitment examination in a fair and transparent manner. This has deeply affected lakhs of aspirants, with many students feeling deceived by the government’s inaction and false promises.
Bhakta Charan Das further criticized the BJD government for failing to deliver on its development agenda, stating that the overall development process in the state has come to a halt since the current administration took over. The Congress argues that the government has failed to keep its commitments to the people and thus no longer deserves their trust.
In this context, the Congress has issued a formal notice to bring in the no-confidence motion during the Assembly session. It’s worth noting that earlier, PCC President Das had publicly declared that if the BJD brought a no-confidence motion, Congress would support it. But since that did not happen, Congress has now taken the lead and is hoping that the BJD will support their motion instead, thereby putting pressure on the ruling party from multiple sides.
The political environment in the Odisha Assembly is expected to heat up in the coming days as the motion is taken up and debated.
