Bhubaneswar, Sep 4 : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday welcomed the GST reforms announced during the 56th GST Council meeting in New Delhi. Describing the reforms as a “landmark decision,” CM Majhi said they align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat and will come into effect from September 22, just before the Navaratri festivities. He emphasized that these measures will not only strengthen the national economy but also bring major benefits to Odisha, a state with strong agricultural and natural resource-based sectors.A key highlight for Odisha is the reduction of GST on Kendu leaves from 18% to 5%. As Odisha is one of the top Kendu leaf-producing states in India, this change is expected to boost the livelihood of thousands of tribal and forest dwellers involved in leaf collection. CM Majhi said the demand for lower GST on Kendu leaves had been long-standing and this move will lead to better prices for pluckers, increased incentives from traders, and overall growth in trade. It marks a win for both economic justice and social empowerment. The Chief Minister also noted a major gain in the coal sector. With the end of the compensation cess on coal and rationalisation of GST, Odisha stands to increase its revenue from coal one of its most important natural resources. Additionally, farmers will benefit significantly due to reduced GST on fertilisers and farm machinery, helping lower input costs and boosting agricultural productivity. These reforms are seen as a major relief for both industrial and rural segments of the state. Beyond sectoral benefits, CM Majhi highlighted how these reforms will ease the burden on middle- and lower-middle-class families in Odisha. Essential items like cement, two-wheelers, and daily-use goods will now be more affordable. The exemption of GST on health insurance premiums will also encourage more people to seek coverage, strengthening financial security across households. The Chief Minister reaffirmed that these reforms are a clear step toward inclusive growth and a more prosperous Odisha.
