Spread across an expansive 12.68 acres of land, Kala Bhoomi boasts a captivating ambience that beckons visitors to immerse themselves in the artistic legacy of the region. Comprising nine galleries and a host of other amenities, including an AV room, children’s play zone, open-air amphitheater, and workshop zones for handicrafts and handlooms, the museum offers a comprehensive exploration of Odisha’s artistic prowess.
Vision and Mission: Kala Bhoomi operates with a vision to promote and revive the state’s languishing crafts while positioning Odisha’s rich heritage on the global stage. Through skillful craftsmanship, artisans breathe life into the vision of art and craft, attracting tourists from across the country and abroad.
Living Museum Concept: A distinguishing feature of Kala Bhoomi is its conceptualization as a “Living Museum.” Here, the artifacts displayed in various galleries are not merely relics of the past but are still actively practiced by artisan and weaving communities throughout the state. This dynamic aspect lends an immersive and authentic experience to visitors, offering a glimpse into the living traditions of Odisha.
Gallery Highlights: Visitors to Kala Bhoomi can explore a diverse array of handicrafts and handlooms showcased across ten galleries. From terracotta and traditional paintings to stone and wood carving, metal crafts, tribal crafts, and pre-weaving techniques, each gallery offers a captivating journey through Odisha’s artistic landscape. Notable attractions include a collection of 114 sarees from different districts, showcasing the intricate beauty of Odia textiles.
Special Features: The museum’s design draws inspiration from Odia landscape and architecture, with laterite stone prominently featured as a building material. Outdoor courtyards display tribal lifestyle and temple architecture, providing a unique insight into Odisha’s cultural tapestry. Additionally, visitors can marvel at outdoor displays, a stepped rainwater reservoir, and a replica of the Kuldevi temple.
Visitor Information: Kala Bhoomi Odisha Crafts Museum welcomes visitors every day from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Admission fees are Rs. 50 for adults, Rs. 20 for students, and children below 12 years old enjoy free entry. The museum is best visited from January to December, offering a year-round opportunity to explore its wonders.
