The test series between New Zealand and England has started. The first Test match of the 3-match Test series is being played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch from 28 November. After winning the toss, England invited the host Kiwi team to bat first. New Zealand made a great start on the first day. By the end of the first day’s play, New Zealand had put 319 runs on the scoreboard after losing 8 wickets. On the second day, the Kiwi team was reduced to 348 runs in the very first session. In response to this, the start of England’s innings was very bad. The English team lost its 3 wickets at the score of just 45 runs.
Opener Jack Collie could not even open his account and became the victim of Matt Henry in the fourth over. At the same time, debutant all-rounder Jacob Bethel failed in his very first match. Bethel scored only 10 runs. After this, number-1 Test batsman Joe Root came on the field to bat but returned to the pavilion without opening his account. Root had a great opportunity to play a big innings in his 150th Test match but he could face only four balls and was bowled by Nathan Smith. In this way a shameful record was registered in the name of Joe Root.
Actually, Joe Root has become the third player in the world to get out on a duck in his 150th Test match. Earlier, this had happened with two batsmen in the history of Test cricket and both of them belonged to Australia. Before Root, former Australian captain Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting had returned to the pavilion after getting out for a duck in their respective 150th Test matches. Steve Waugh had made this bad record in the year 2002 whereas this happened with Ponting in the year 2010.
