Playback singer Anup Ghoshal passes away at 78
Kolkata, Dec 15 (UNI) Noted playback singer Anup Ghoshal who attend a cult status for giving memorable numbers for Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Bagha movies, died in a city hospital on Friday following a brief illness, official sources said.
He was 78. He was admitted to a private hospital in south Kolkata last week and was on artificial ventilation support. His end came around 1345 hours, the medics said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while reacting to the demise of the playback singer and composer, said it was a great loss to the music world.
Besides rendering the title song of Goopy Gyen Bagha Byne (1969), Ghoshal also contributed songs to many of Ray’s movies, including Hirak Rajar Deshe, and was the composer of Mrinal Sen’s movie Sagina Mahato.
Besides being a prominent Nazrul sangeet exponent, Ghoshal also contributed music to Hindi and other language movies, said the chief minister.
He was also elected to the West Bengal legislative assembly in 2011 from the TMC ticket.
The state government awarded him Nazrul Smiti Puraskar in 2011 and Sangeet Mahasanman in 2013.
