This Indian player got direct entry in Australia Open 2025, Novak Djokovic’s name also included in the list.
Before Australia Open 2025, a big good news has come for Indian tennis fans. The organizers of the Australian Open have released the main draw list for 2025 on Friday. In which top 50 ranked players in ATP and WTA-ranking have been signed up. The main draw will start from January 12 and the final will be played on January 26. Now, on a happier note for India, Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal is set to make his fifth appearance at a Grand Slam after getting a direct entry into the main draw of next year’s Australian Open.
Did a big feat last season
Sumit Nagal’s world ranking is currently 98. He has been given direct entry into the main draw of men’s singles. Sumit Nagal participated in four Grand Slams in the year 2024 and he reached his best ranking of 68. After making it to the main round from the qualifying stage of the Australian Open last season, he defeated 31st seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the opening match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (5). He then became the first Indian player in 34 years to defeat a seeded player in the main draw of a Grand Slam.
Djokovic’s name also included in the list
On the other hand, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic has been seeded 7th in men’s singles after a disappointing 2024 season. Djokovic completed his tennis journey by winning the gold medal in the Paris Olympics, but failed to win a single ATP title this year. Meanwhile, fan favorite Australian Nick Kyrgios is set to make a comeback after missing the last two seasons due to knee injuries. The 2022 Wimbledon finalists are given direct entry under the protected ranking.
