IND vs AUS: Nitish Kumar Reddy scored a brilliant century to lead India’s comeback in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test against Australia on 28 December. When Rishabh Pant returned to the pavilion after being out on the third day of the Boxing Day Test, India’s score was 191 for 6 wickets. After this Nitish Reddy stepped on the field and then new history was made. Nitish Reddy came to bat at number 8 and along with Washington Sundar made a partnership of more than 100 runs. The Australian bowlers tried their best to break this partnership but both the Indian batsmen managed to take the team’s score close to 350. Washington Sundar returned to the pavilion after scoring 50 runs. After this the real test of Nitish Reddy began.

When Sundar returned to the pavilion, Reddy was just 3 runs away from completing his maiden Test century. Soon after Sundar’s dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah was also dismissed. At this time Reddy and the last batsman Mohammad Siraj were at the crease. Siraj played three balls of host captain Pat Cummins carefully. With this, the moment came for Reddy which he had been dreaming of for many years. Reddy completed his century by hitting a straight four off Scott Boland and celebrated by sitting on his knees and placing his helmet on the bat.

122 year old record destroyed

Reddy became only the fourth batsman to score a century at the MCG as a batsman ranked No. 8 or below. Before him, Australia’s Reggie Duff, Jack Gregory and Ray Lindwall have been the only other players to have scored a century at this ground while batting at number 8 or below. The interesting thing is that before Nitish, the three players who had scored centuries here while playing at number 8 or below, were all Australians. That means Nitish Reddy has become the first foreign player to score a century as a batsman ranked No. 8 or below in Melbourne. Not only this, at Melbourne Cricket Ground Has become the batsman to play the biggest innings while batting at number 8 or below. He broke the 122 year old world record of Reggie Duff.
