ICC fined Afghanistan’s star player for protesting against the umpire
Afghanistan left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqui was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for protesting against an umpire’s decision during the second match of the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe in Harare. This fine was imposed under a level one breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. Farooqui committed this violation during an international match when he disagreed with the umpire’s decision. The incident occurred during the 5th over of Zimbabwe’s innings, when Faruqui had appealed for LBW against Craig Irwin, which was rejected by the umpire. After this, Farooqui disagreed and motioned for a review, although DRS was not available in the match.
ICC added demerit points
Under Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, this breach pertains to players and their support staff objecting to the umpire’s decision. Due to this violation, Faruqui was fined 15 percent of his match fee and one demerit point was also added to his disciplinary record. This was the first time Farooqui has violated the code of conduct within the last 24 months.
Even before this a player was fined
Farooqui accepted the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft, who was the match referee for the match. Under the ICC Code of Conduct, players accepting a fine do not face a disciplinary hearing, provided they accept the fine. This incident happened during the match played between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, which was in the news due to controversies in international cricket. The incident not only affected Faruqi’s playing life, but also showed that the ICC expects the highest level of discipline from players under its code of conduct. This could be a learning experience for Farooqui, and he will try to be more cautious to avoid such situations in the future. Afghanistan players have been fined earlier also during this tour. This player was Gulabdin Naib.
