D Gukesh got a crushing defeat in the World Chess Championship, the Chinese player won
Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has faced defeat in the World Chess Championship. He was defeated by the current champion Ding Liren of China in a very stressful first match. Playing with the black pieces, Liren has taken an early lead in the match of 14 games. These competitions will continue till mid-December. Gukesh said after the first match that this happens. It is a long match. I had expected a similar performance from Liren. We have a lot to play ahead and it is going to be very exciting.
Gukesh had made a mistake in the beginning itself
By winning while playing with the black pieces, Liren not only got full points but also got a psychological advantage in the competition for the prize money of 2.5 million dollars. The first player to reach 7.5 points will be the winner. The world champion’s youngest challenger, 18-year-old Gukesh, made a mistake in the beginning by moving the king’s front pawn two houses. Such a move conveys an aggressive attitude and Liren responded with the ‘French Defence’. Gukesh said that I was nervous but became comfortable after the game started but then lost the rhythm.
Gukesh adopted Vishwanathan’s plan
Gukesh adopted the same strategy that Viswanathan Anand had adopted when he won his first World Championship title against Alexey Shirov of Spain in 2001. Gukesh had an advantage of half an hour till the 12th move but after eight moves Liren got extra minutes which proved that he had overcome his initial problem. After this he performed brilliantly and won in 42 moves. Liren said in the press conference after the match that I have not won a singles classical match for a long time but managed to win today. I was lucky because I missed twice. He said that in the first match he was nervous initially, so I did something different which I had not done for a long time and this strategy worked.
