Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. Sam Constas, who made his Test debut in Melbourne, along with partner Usman Khawaja gave a great start to Australia. 19 year old Sam Constas scored a half-century in just 52 balls while Usman Khawaja also scored a half-century after a long time. Constas played a brilliant inning of 60 runs in his debut test. He hit 6 fours and two sixes in his innings. Constas and Usman Khawaja returned to the pavilion after completing half-centuries even before the tea break. After this, Marnus Labuschagne along with Steve Smith took over the innings and took the score beyond 200. Labuschagne returned to the pavilion after scoring 72 runs. In the current test series Travis Head, who scored two consecutive centuries, could not even open his account this time and gave his wicket to Bumrah. Mitchell Marsh also failed with the bat.Steve Smith held one end till the end of the first day’s play and returned unbeaten after scoring 68 runs. Australia’s top order batted brilliantly on the first day of the Boxing Day Test. Four batsmen scored half-centuries in the top order. In this way, a big record was created for 9 years in the history of Border-Gavaskar Trophy i.e. BGT. Actually, this has happened in the history of BGT after 2015 when 4 top order batsmen of Australia have scored half-centuries in a test match. Earlier this feat was seen in the Sydney Test in 2015.
