Repair Work of Natamandap at Jagannath Temple in Puri Commences Today

Bhubaneswar: The restoration and repair work of the Natamandap (Dancing Hall) at the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri are set to commence today, following a decision taken during a recent meeting.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will undertake the repair work, which is scheduled to continue until March 19. Work will be carried out daily from 1 pm to 7 pm to ensure the preservation of this historically significant structure.

The decision to initiate repair work was made during a Chhatisa Nijog meeting held on February 21. Additionally, it was resolved in the meeting that the Lion’s Gate will be opened at 2 am, and the Ratra Pahuda ritual will take place at 11 pm, facilitating the smooth conduct of temple rituals.

The urgency for repair work arose after Lawyer N K Mohanty, acting as amicus curiae in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the conservation of the Jagannath Temple, informed the Orissa High Court about a cracked beam inside the Natamandap. Mohanty emphasized the need for urgent repairs, highlighting the potential risk of accidents due to the compromised structural integrity.

In a report submitted to the court, Mohanty underscored the criticality of addressing the cracked beam, which is functioning as a cantilever from both sides. The structural instability posed a significant risk, necessitating immediate intervention to prevent any mishaps.

To mitigate the risk and ensure the safety of the temple premises, the ASI has devised a plan to place a support beam under the cracked structure. This strategic measure aims to provide additional reinforcement and avert potential structural imbalances or disasters.
