Odisha Tiger Estimation Reveals Significant Increase in Tiger Population, Similipal Emerges as Sanctuary

Bhubaneswar: The inaugural All-Odisha Tiger Estimation (AOTE) for the year 2023-24 has unveiled a remarkable surge in the tiger population across the state. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced on Monday that the comprehensive survey has documented the presence of 30 majestic tigers inhabiting the lush forests of Odisha, marking a notable increase from the 20 reported in the previous year.

Among the most noteworthy findings of the estimation is the thriving tiger population within the confines of the Similipal Tiger Reserve, which now stands as a beacon of hope for tiger conservation efforts in the region. With a staggering count of 27 tigers, the reserve has solidified its position as a vital sanctuary for these iconic creatures.

Chief Minister Patnaik took to social media to commend the diligent efforts of the Forest department, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to creating a conducive habitat for the flourishing of the national animal. The substantial rise in the tiger population serves as a testament to their tireless dedication and proactive conservation measures.

The eagerly anticipated unveiling of the AOTE 2023-24 findings by the Forest department on Tuesday promises to offer invaluable insights into the dynamics of the state’s tiger population. This estimation assumes heightened significance in light of concerns raised by the All-India Tiger Estimation (AITE) 2022, which highlighted a decline in Odisha’s tiger population.

Responding to these concerns with urgency, the Odisha government initiated its own tiger census in October 2023, signaling a renewed commitment to wildlife conservation. The comprehensive AOTE, spanning across 47 forest divisions, aimed to provide a thorough and intensive assessment of the state’s tiger population.

Utilizing a combination of field surveys and advanced camera trapping techniques, the estimation process yielded promising results, with a total of 27 unique adult tigers captured on camera traps. Notably, the Similipal Tiger Reserve showcased the highest concentration of tiger sightings, reaffirming its status as a vital stronghold for tiger conservation efforts.

Apart from Similipal, other regions such as the Hirakud Wildlife Division and Paralakhemundi Territorial Forest Division also recorded significant tiger sightings, highlighting the importance of diverse habitats in sustaining tiger populations.

The successful AOTE 2023-24 stands as a monumental achievement in Odisha’s ongoing efforts towards tiger conservation. It underscores the importance of collaborative initiatives between government agencies, conservation organizations, and local communities in safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the state and ensuring a secure future for its iconic wildlife species.
