Bangladesh’s Awami League Secures Convincing Victory in Parliamentary Elections
Bangladesh: In the wake of the 12th general elections in Bangladesh, Awami League (AL) President and newly-elected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hailed the party’s triumph as a “people’s victory,” emphasizing that the polls exemplified the ability to conduct “free, fair, and neutral” elections in the country. The AL-led 14-party alliance secured a landslide victory, granting them the opportunity to form the government for the fourth consecutive term with over two-thirds majority.
During an interaction with foreign journalists and election observers at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister, Hasina credited the win to the fair application of voting rights and the people’s power to choose their government. Despite facing challenges, including the boycott by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the AL emerged victorious in most constituencies.
The Election Commission (EC) has unofficially announced results for 298 parliamentary seats, with the AL winning 286 out of them. The impressive victory allows Hasina to lead the government for the fifth time, securing elections for a consecutive fourth term.
The AL’s dominance was evident across districts, with victories in strongholds like Dhaka, Gopalganj, Faridpur, Gazipur, Tangail, Khulna, Bagerhat, Chittagong, Rajshahi, and more. Despite losing in some areas, the AL’s influence remains strong, showcasing the party’s widespread support.
The electoral success reaffirms Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, and the focus now shifts to the AL’s agenda for the country’s progress in the coming term. As Bangladesh prepares for continued governance under the Awami League.
