Daringbadi: Two people died and six were seriously injured after consuming jelly made from mango kernel. The incident took place in Gadapur Mandipanka village under Daringbadi police station in Kandhamal district. The deceased have been identified as Ramita Pat Majhi (27) and Runu Majhi. The six injured have been admitted to the Berhampur MKCG.
Ramita and Runu had eaten mango kernel jelly prepared with jaggery. After this, they started experiencing stomach pain and vomiting. Ramita’s condition had deteriorated. She was admitted to Brahmani Community Health Center (CHH) on Wednesday, where one woman succumbed to her ailment. Another young woman died in an ambulance while being shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
According to reports, eight people fell critically ill after consuming a jelly prepared with mango kernel extract a few days back. As the condition of the six other patients deteriorated, they were all shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
While the precise reason for the deaths is yet to be ascertained, it is being suspected that food poisoning after consumption of the jelly might have caused their illness.
Meanwhile, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling has ordered a judicial investigation into the death of two women after consumption of mango kernel. “The Health Department has initiated an investigation into the matter. Officials from the District Headquarters Hospital and Health Directorate have arrived on-site to assess the situation, with a medical team conducting detailed inquiries,” the minister said.
