6 More Gates of Hirakud Dam Has Now Opened

Sambalpur: Hirakud Dam opened 6 more gates. The flood water is being discharged through 14 gates. Due to heavy rains, the water level is rising in the upper reaches of Hirakud. In this regard, 6 out gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened. Until yesterday, flood water was being discharged through 8 gates.

Every second, 2 lakh 61 thousand 766 cusecs of water enters the reservoir while 1 lakh 57 thousand 448 cusecs of water is discharged. The water level in the reservoir has increased to 611.67 feet. On the other hand, due to the opening of the gate, the risk of flooding has increased in the floodplains

It is worth noting that the maximum water storage capacity of Hirakud Dam is 630 feet. However, according to the curve rule guide line of the dam, the water level of Hirakud is kept at 605 feet by the end of July and the first week of August. Because of the heavy rains in the month of August, a height of 25 feet is kept empty in the dam. Due to this, when the flood water in Chhattisgarh in August comes in large quantities, that water is filled in the dam and stored there.

On the other hand, Monsoon is active in the state. It continues to rain in its influence and intensity. But in the next 5 days, the rainfall may reduce slightly in the state. It may rain in some places. The Meteorological Department has informed that no cyclone is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal next week.
