Similipal Tiger Reserve Rekindles Adventure: Doors Open After Month-Long Closure

Baripada: After a month-long closure, the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district welcomed back tourists on Wednesday. The decision to reopen came after a constructive meeting between local representatives from Similipal Vikash Parishad, officials from STR, and Jashipur police at Chahala Chhak on Tuesday. During the meeting, the Deputy Director of STR, North Wildlife Division, Sai Kiran, assured that the protesters’ demands would be addressed through government-sponsored schemes.

The temporary closure of the reserve was initiated on November 27 when protesters blocked entry points at Jashipur, citing concerns over essential amenities. Demands included the installation of towers, mobile network facilities, well-constructed roads, and concrete bridges within the park.

Speaking at the meeting, Sai Kiran acknowledged the importance of the demands raised by the local outfit and assured them that the government would address these issues within the framework of existing schemes. The cooperative dialogue resulted in a consensus to reopen the tiger reserve, allowing the resumption of tourism activities.

The road blockade had a significant impact on the entry of visitors to the nature camps situated in the reserve’s buffer area, including popular sites like Gudgudia, Jamuani, Kumari, Barehipani, and Ramtirtha.

Official reports indicate that, until April 30, 2023, the park had received 38,262 tourists, generating revenue of Rs 17,92,695. The sudden closure disrupted this positive trend, prompting the need for swift resolution and reopening to ensure the continued flow of tourists and revenue.

Similipal Tiger Reserve, known for its rich biodiversity and lush landscapes, plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation in the region. The reopening marks a positive step forward, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between local communities, government authorities, and wildlife officials in addressing concerns while sustaining tourism and conservation initiatives.

As the gates of Similipal Tiger Reserve swing open once again, tourists and nature enthusiasts can look forward to exploring the breathtaking beauty of the reserve, mindful of the delicate balance between conservation and responsible tourism. The successful resolution of the issues demonstrates the effectiveness of open communication and cooperation in preserving our natural heritage.
