Speaker meets PM, Opposition leaders after abrupt session end

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other Opposition leaders met Lok Sabha Om Birla on Wednesday after the Monsoon Session came to abrupt end with the Speaker adjourning the House sine die ahead of schedule.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and leaders from other Opposition parties including All India Trinamool Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, BJD, YSRCP, and others were also present.

The Speaker urged all leaders to encourage debate and discussions instead of disruptions.

He also said people’s issues can be addressed only when the House functions, and debates happen.

Marred by protests and repeated adjournments, the House was adjourned sine die, two days ahead of the schedule.

Mr Birla has expressed anguish over the continuing protests, with MPs trooping near the Speaker’s podium raising slogans and showing placards.

The Monsoon Session that started on July 19, was scheduled to end on August 13.
