Hockey World Cup 2023: Big mess surfaced in Japan-Korea match, FIH To Investigate
It was a bizarre scenes, the excitement of the Hockey World Cup is at its peak in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar in Odisha. On Tuesday, a match was played between Japan and Korea, in which Korea won 2-1. However, a major glitch has come to light in this match. In fact, in this match, instead of 11 of Japan, 12 players reached the pitch.
The incident occurred when Japan was trailing by 1-2 and were awarded a penalty corner in the dying moments of the match.
While taking the penalty corner no one realised that Japan had 12 players on the field. Japan had withdrawn their goalkeeper in the last two minutes for an extra man up front. But surprisingly still the number exceeded the regulatory 11 players on each side.
According to a statement, “FIH officials did not take note of the situation at that time after the match. They have now spoken to the Japanese team who have explained that they had no idea about this at all. Admitting his mistake, he has expressed a sincere apology. FIH officials have also informed the Korean team about the matter. The FIH is currently investigating the issue of how this happened. However, this will not have any effect on the final result of the match.
“The FIH officials have explained the matter to the Korean team” and the federation is “currently investigating the issue to establish how it happened,” the FIH release said.
