Kolkata, June 29: Former footballer Chandan Banerjee, who led East Bengal many a silverwares in the late 60, died at a private hospital early on Thursday.
He was 88 and had been undergoing treatment for a terminal disease, East Bengal sources said.
He died there around 3:30 am.
Stopper Chandan Banerjee had played with the red-yellow jersey in the sixties and became the captain of East Bengal in 1966.
In 2015, the club bestowed him with the lifetime achievement. His body was taken to the East Bengal club tent in the Maidan where the club officials and hundreds of followers paid their respect with
flowers.

His dream of playing for East Bengal fruitfied when he was made captain and led the club to win many trophies.
He started his career as a footballer in 1954 from Milon Samiti. After that he joined George Telegraph through Bhawanipur and came into limelight, which immediately rewarded him after then chief of East
Bengal Jyotish Guha made him sign for his club in 1963.
