Woman ward member dies in elephant attack in Keonjhar
Keonjhar: In yet another instance of man-animal conflict, a woman ward member has been trampled to death by an elephant in Keonjhar district of Odisha on Thursday, said reports.
The deceased has been identified as Draupadi Naik, wife of Dwitikrishna Naik. She was also a ward member of Akula Panchayat No. 10.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night when Draupadi had gone to a mango grove near her house to collect mangoes after a thunderstorm. In the mango grove, she was severely attacked by a wild elephant. However, an injured Draupadi somehow managed to reach her house after the attack.
The elephant attacked Draupadi and escaped. After some time, the family members rescued her and brought her to Telkoi Medical Center.
At the medical center the doctor declared her brought dead. However, after this incident the forest department has given a Rs. 60,000 compensation to the family of the deceased in the first phase. It is reported that, a 15-year-old elephant is found to be living in Banbiharipur area under Keonjhar forest division.
