Manipur has been roiled by violence between the tribals and the majority Meitei community since Wednesday evening.
The violence started on Wednesday during a protest march by tribals against a Manipur High Court order backing the inclusion of non-tribal Meities in the list of Scheduled Tribes. It had incensed the Naga and Kuki tribals, who comprise less than 40 per cent of the population.
Violence quickly engulfed the state where ethnic fault lines run deep, displacing thousands of people who fled burning homes and neighbourhoods. The violence didn’t abate till late on Thursday evening even as thousands of army and paramilitary personnel fanned across the state.
Meanwhile, Manipur government on Thursday issued shoot at sight order in “extreme cases” to contain spiralling violence in the state between tribals and the majority Meitei community which has displaced over 9,000 people from their villages.
In the midst of this violence, the cry of many Odia students is echoing, Many medical students are trapped in various medical and educational institutions. They have nothing to eat. Hostels are closed, ATMs are closed, internet is closed, everything shutdown.
Children from other states are being released safely at the airport by the army forces after the intervention of the concerned government.
