Intense heatwave cripples normal life in Odisha, Bhubaneswar Records 32°C By 8.30AM
Bhubaneswar: The heat wave sweeping across Odisha is showing no signs of abating, a day after recording the highest temperature of the season so far at 42.7 degree Celsius, Bhubaneswar on Wednesday saw the mercury soaring to 32 degree Celsius by 8.30 am.
However, the regional office of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and light rain in some parts of Odisha on April 21. This would bring some relief to people who are reeling under the severe summer heat.
Meanwhile, the regional Met office issued heatwave warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh districts on Wednesday. It has also predicted thunderstorm and lightning for some places in the state between Thursday and Saturday under influence of an approaching western disturbance.
The weatherman said that Odisha may see a slight drop in the mercury level if thunderstorms occur.
All schools and Anganwadi Centre for Class I up to Class XII have been shut till April 20.
Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning here that 30 places in Odisha on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C or above. As per the IMD data, Baripada recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.5°C, which is at least 6.4°C above normal.
Nuapada was the second hottest place in the state at 44.4°C, followed by Balangir (44.0°C). The maximum temperature was above 43°C – Boudh, Talcher, Angul, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Titlagarh, and Sundargarh.
