Why to keep Joshimath probe details a secret? Was the system asleep since years? Why punish them who foresaw it!

It is not new perhaps that the dangers of the Joshimath sinking came to the fore. It had been realised earlier and the same was informed to the concerned state government. The apprehensions about the debilitation of the surfaces they were predicted in even the 70s.

However, of late, in 2021 petitions in this regard were heaped in the Uttarakhand High Court but were subsequently dismissed with costs. Now, the investigation by the special cell has come out with the points that, it was warned much earlier but were neglected. Were they villains for foreseeing the crisis and file petitions.

Further details pertaining to are still not known to the media. Surprisingly, the probe agency was asked not to make the technical details public. One does not know why?

There is no secret regarding the sinking Joshimath and already evacuation and demolition process are in place. Two days back there were further petitions in the Supreme Court but, the apex court has directed that the Uttarakhand High Court to be approached over Joshimath sinking it has been already dealing with the petitions relating to that. Strangely, there had been no satisfying outcome over the earlier petitions before the Uttarakhand High Court (UHC), in 2021 but were dismissed.

However, this time the honourable court has directed for an independent investigation.

Even the “petitions showing the cracks and impending threat to the areas were presented before the court, the judiciary remained asleep” rued Colin Gonsalves, the Supreme Court advocate. It is yet to be found out that why the revelations of the enquiry be kept away from public domain when the disaster cannot be capsuled in a secrecy.

Lets for a while think about the people who built the houses or buildings investing fortunes and taking loans, the sudden decisions for demolition is so un-nerving. “Water coming from underground is dangerous as it’s creating a vacuum, causing sinking,” Uttarakhand Disaster Management Board Secretary Ranjit Sinha told news agency on 6 January to a leading news agency called ANI.
