What made Kiren Rijiju the former Law minister get suddenly ejected from his post. In fact, sources say that he had to pay the price for his few controversial takes on the judiciary and the Apex Court in particular.
Rijiju was in the firing line since the controversies over the collegiums and his sharp differences over the sedition law of the country.
He not only used some unfriendly language but resorted to question the wisdom of the Supreme Court.
He reportedly never maintained the decorum towards the judiciary as many of his predecessors who even at occasions differed with the judges.
Often he was very cryptic and straight in his observations on important issues like either Collegium or abolition of the Sedition Law or on many other burning issues resulting in the Judiciary even side-stepped the required courtesy gestures between a Law Minister and the judges.
But Rejiju took the other route to settle the scores straight talking through the media in general. It touched the extreme limit when Rejiju had remarked in a very frontal note he does not approve the way many courts functioned.
“We told the Supreme Court that the government is thinking about changing the provision of the sedition law. Despite that, the Supreme Court struck down the provisions of the law. I was very upset about it.” was how the former Law Minister crossed swords with the Apex Court.
There were many occasions which led his remarks to create a jitters and triggered more rumours and criticism.
These remarks of his drew such widespread criticism that even former Solicitor General Harish Salve reportedly remarked:
“The Law Minister crossed the Lakshman Rekha by what he said in my opinion. If he thinks that the Supreme Court must hold its hand when it sees a brazenly unconstitutional law and be hostage to the government’s kindness to amend that law, sorry that’s wrong” reports had said then.
There is a difference between differing with the courts and brazenly firing salvos questioning the merits of the judges. Rejiju obviously failed to maintain his composure and from then opinions led to his gradual decline in his role as a Law Minister.
