Rahul Case: Lowering of political civility has become endemic

By D N Singh

‘How come all the thieves have the common surname Modi’that was an excerpt from Rahul Gandhi’s sweeping statement against a community and was in bad taste.

For which Rahul has been sentenced to two years jail although it has been made to 30 days by the court.

In today’s politics the level of political speeches have obviously been taken to new lows irrespective of party. Be it any political party taking the attacks to a personal level and making it a jibe at a community is unfair and calls for punitive action either by a court or an individual tendering an apology.

It has been observed that in last one decade or so, politics has lowered its stature and so does the language used by the politicians.

Be it Rahul Gandhi or any leader including the Prime Minister of the country the political civility postulate that nobody indulges in the toxicity of terms and remember the narratives of earlier times when the political discourses remained within an intellectual realm not allowing it to be a generalized one beyond the issues those matter to the general people.

The decision must send the message that nobody is above the social scrutiny regardless of his place or position.

So any term that pertains to be uncivil is entirely dispensable.

The Congress has enjoyed an unassailable reign for decades in India and the political language have never been so generalized or lacked the tenor of decency ever.
