When the nation takes pride in inaugurating the new Parliament and the PM calls in as the ‘temple of democracy’, people must be shocked to see the legends in wrestling floored down and muscled to bow before an angry Delhi police.
Their fault was what, that they wanted to march towards the new Parliament as a token of protest seeking justice for them and punishment for a perpetrator of an alleged crime as serious as sexual harassment and fear psychosis..
Which was their democratic right.
Let’s not forget that they are the ones who were on the victory podium earning laurels for the nation and not just ordinary citizens.
Was the Delhi police on its ground to choosing such a recourse of physical force and humiliation in the media glare.
Internationally famous Olympic medal-winning wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik along with three-time Commonwealth Games champion and Asian Games silver medallist Vinesh Phogat were stopped, physically pulled, pushed, and dragged on the roads at Jantar Mantar before being detained by the Delhi Police on Sunday, 28 May, morning.
Was that the right way to handle the legends of a sports? The videos and the pictures in the media can disturb anybody.
Delhi police lost its way?
There were perhaps other ways to stop the sporting legends from the march like, doubling of barricades or use of water cannons and so on.
Dragging some of the protesting wrestlers physically like gunny bags and literally carried and dumped in buses for taking to different locations was so humiliating and smacks of vengeance triggered by politics somewhere.
And the man in question Brij Bhushan with all the so called civilized power in his command enjoy a liberty that Delhi police fails to see.
However, Yoga guru Ramdev has gathered the guts to speak out demanding arrest of Brij Bhushan, a BJP MP.
