Records are there to say what politic is all about so, it hardly requires glossing the obvious. There were en number of criticisms over the Prime Minister because of his prolonged silence over Manipur shame. Surely that were not shrill shouts.
The man who has louder than any in the country tossed the slogan ‘Beti bachao’as his passionate pursuit has really surprised many.
He had visited Manipur and NE states during the elections and doing the welfare programming etc he has not bothered to be there after the bloodiest ever incident in the history of Manipur.
Not even the Union Home minister Amit Shah went there even once except taking information verbally from the state CM .
So visible a man, the PM with his doggedness to make many promises for jacking the fate of Manipur has evaporated from the scene now.
Undisputedly, had the PM made a visit even after the ethnic unrest outbreak then the scene would have been definitely more manageable. Which would have helped the ruffled psyche of the warring groups get smoothened.
But, for whatever reason he gave a short-shrift to the entire issue and the things turned more difficult day after day.
“The Prime Minister, who has so visibly travelled to the Northeast on so many different occasions, who makes a lot of hue and cry that no other Prime Minister before him or no other government has visited the Northeast as much as possible, seems to be a Prime Minister that only visits for government inaugurations, inaugurating roads and highways and railway stations. But when there is crisis, he is nowhere to be found,” said Gaurav Gogoiin an interview to a reputed news portal.
Even as the government has agreed to hold a discussion on the continuing violence in Manipur, the logjam in the Parliament’s ongoing Monsoon Session has continued with the Opposition demanding that PM Modi makes a statement in the House.
It is a classic doomsday scenario which plays out there and we, even not being there, can feel what is happening there.
Even after a week the Parliament stands where it was and Manipur remains abandoned. Strange that after that even there is no unanimous statement of solidarity from all political parties at quelling the irritants in Manipur. That rubs more salt on the injuries.
Not a word of sorry
Ideally what would have been politically appropriate that all political parties on day one should have risen together, passed a resolution saying that we are sorry for what has happened in Manipur. We express our solidarity with those who have been victims of violence. We appeal to everyone to lay down their arms and come forward and let us start the process of dialogue and reconciliation.
That, perhaps, would have made a magic impact. That would have been possibly the occasion the Prime Minister himself could have spoken on this. In fact, this is exactly what has happened in the past when there has been a conflict in the Northeast.
“And it’s ironical that the prime Minister chooses to make a statement outside Parliament, but even that he does not want to repeat inside Parliament. He expressed solidarity with the women, but he doesn’t want to say that inside Parliament” added Gogoi.
Knowing well about the numbers in the house the opposition brought no confidence motion but if that inspires the PM to make a firm statement on Manipur and a resolution for peace that can help improving the situations there.
Humanitarian catastrophe
Even the BJP need not change the goal posts talking over what happened in Chhatisgarh or Rajasthan. Manipur incidents have played themselves as a humanitarian catastrophe and requires an unanimous voice.
