On this day of International Day of Happiness this can suffice to substantiate it that happiness of a nation can be measured from the population those are really happy so, a nation’s happiness is not about the economic and military power.

A profound shift in attitudes is underway all over the world. People are now recognising that ‘progress’ should be about increasing human happiness and wellbeing

There is nothing greater than happiness so,  March 20 has been established as the annual International Day of Happiness and all 193 United Nations member states have adopted a resolution calling for happiness to be given greater priority.

But given the reality at the bottom India with its rich cultural roots and religious virtues should have been at the forefront in the list.

Fundamental human goal

But why India falters and small nations with lesser economic power and less developed nations have left India far behind

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution which recognised happiness as a “fundamental human goal” and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

As of 2022, India is in the 136th rank out of 146 countries on World Happiness Index and it is the 4th least happy country in the world.

Why so?

The reasons for such chronic unhappiness are not far to locate. The rich becoming richer and the poor poorer. Which is the paramount obstacle on way to happiness.

Added to that is the rapid urbanization, increasing congestions and rise in pollution and a markedly a very polluted political environment.

Not to mention about the menace of cost of living, a very costly health care system. Plus increasing crime against women and the minorities.

“This International Day of Happiness is more than just a fun celebration, it also remind us all that the world is a better place when we connect with and care about the people around us” UN
