Cow Hug Day, may be something unheard of for many, but the stipulated occasion had been conceived by a religious outfit came as a jitter and the government of India has been forced to go back-foot on it.
It was scheduled to be celebrated on February 14 and an appeal to celebrate was put on hold by the Animal Welfare Board of India(AWBI).
Interestingly, the decision to backtrack was taken after the direction from the government itself.
According to an AWBI statement. “As directed by the Competent Authority and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the appeal issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for celebration of Cow Hug Day on 14 February 2023 stands withdrawn,” the statement read.Between the lines: The U-turn comes after the appeal released by AWBI on 6 February sparked a meme fest on the internet.
Notably, the government advisory body had said that hugging a cow will bring “emotional richness” and will increase “individual and collective happiness.”
There are occasions when in India cows are worshipped with devotion and rituals revering the animal as a mother but to convert and give it a national shape did not go well even with netizens.
