BJD nominates Pramila Mallick for first woman Odisha Assembly speaker post
Bhubaneswar, Sep 20 : Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallik will become the first woman speaker of Odisha legislative Assembly.
Ruling Biju Janata Dal on Wednesday nominated her name for the Speaker post, the election of which will be held on September 22, on the inaugural day of the monsoon session of the Assembly.
Considering the strength of the ruling BJD in the State Assembly, it will be a foregone conclusion that the six time MLA Pramila Mallick will be the next Speaker of the Odisha Assembly,the post which was lying vacant following the resignation of Speaker Bikram Keshari Aarukh on May 12 last.
Aarukh who resigned from the Speaker post was subsequently inducted into the council of ministers as state Finance Minister.
Pramila Mallik, a six-time MLA from Bhinjharour (SC ) Assembly seat had held women and Child development Minister thrice in the Naveen Patnaik government .She was also the Chief whip of the ruling BJD in the Assembly before being inducted into the Naveen Patnaik cabinet as the Revenue and Disaster Management minister.
A delighted Pramila Mallick thanked Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for reposing confidence in her for the Speaker post.
She is likely to file her nomination for the Speaker post on Thursday.
